Muskies beat Trine to advance to Regional Championship game

With the win, Muskingum (28-16) advances to the Regional Championship game on Sunday, May 11 at noon. The Muskies will face Trine in a rematch after the Thunder beat DePauw 4-1 in an elimination game Saturday afternoon. The game will be broadcast live on WMCO 90.7 FM and simulcast on the Internet at http://tun.in/seq8Y. This marks Muskingum's first Regional Championship game appearance since 2008.
The Muskies grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on sophomore Kelly Martin's RBI double that scored junior Kayley Bevard from first.
Muskingum made it 2-0 in the second inning on sophomore Fallon Gawry's solo home run to left field. The long ball was the first of Gawry's career.
The Muskies extended their lead to 5-0 with a three-run fifth. The inning was highlighted by Bevard's two-run single and Martin's RBI single.
Trine (38-4) finally broke through in the top of the seventh. The Thunder scored four runs on four hits and had the game-tying run on second base with two outs when Leah Hall flew out to junior Hannah Reese in center field to end the game.
Muskingum sophomore Sarah Browning had limited the high-octane offense of Trine to six hits through the first six innings. Browning ended the outing allowing three runs on nine hits with one strikeout to improve to 2-0. Sophomore Kristin Gill notched her first save of the year after tossing the final frame and allowing one run on one hit.
Bevard led the Muskies going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Martin also added a 2-for-3 performance with two RBIs, while Gawry went 2-for-3 with a home run.
Bree Fuller took the loss after allowing five runs on seven hits. The defeat was just the second of the season for Fuller who now stands at 22-2.
Kaitlyn Clark led Trine going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a double and Haleigh Daniels went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, a run scored and a double.
