Case Western Reserve
Muskingum softball pushed Case Western Reserve to the final out before coming up just short in a 3-2 loss on Thursday at the NCAA Regional hosted by Swarthmore.
The Muskies trailed 3-0 entering the sixth inning before mounting a late comeback. Muskingum got on the board in the sixth when senior Elizabeth Wauford turned on a first-pitch offering and sent it over the left field fence for a solo home run, cutting the deficit to 3-1.
Muskingum kept the pressure on in the seventh. Senior Cara Taylor reached base and later advanced into scoring position, eventually crossing the plate when freshman Payton Hochradel reached on an error, making it a one-run game. With the tying run on second base, the Muskies had a chance to extend the game, but the rally ended on a deep fly ball to left field that was hauled in for the final out.
Case Western Reserve scored twice in the third inning and added an insurance run in the fifth. Muskingum starter junior Tareyn Born battled throughout, keeping the Muskies within striking distance and giving the offense an opportunity late.
Muskingum now faces an elimination game against Messiah at 1:30 PM on Friday. The Muskies defeated the Falcons earlier this season at the Space Coast Games, 3–2.
