With tremendous determination, courage, and strength of heart, the Muskingum softball team – under the leadership of legendary Coach Donna Newberry – won the University's first NCAA Division III team national championship on Sunday, May 20, 2001. Muskingum won the NCAA Division III Softball National Championship with a 4-1 triumph over Central College. The victory, a school-record 47th of the season, still stands as the most wins in a campaign by a Muskie softball squad.
Muskingum won the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Regular-Season Championship, the OAC Tournament Championship, and the NCAA Central Region Championship en route to the World Series. The Muskies ended the year winning 34 straight games to set the NCAA Division III record for the longest winning streak.
The championship team members will also be recognized during the Muskingum men's and women's basketball doubleheader against Otterbein on Saturday, January 29.
